Breed Standard - Wavy coats

Reading the Irish Setter breed standard which states:

 

"Coat
On head, front of legs and tips of ears, short and fine; on all other parts of body and legs of moderate length, flat and as free as possible from curl or wave. Feathers on upper portion of ears long and silky; on back of fore- and hindlegs long and fine. Fair amount of hair on belly, forming a nice fringe which may extend on to chest and throat. Feet well feathered between toes. Tail to have fringe of moderately long hair decreasing in length as it approaches point. All feathering to be as straight and flat as possible".

 

it seems that a large proportion of the IS's have very wavy if not curly coats; not that I have anything against that but we seem to be getting away from the breed standard?  I understand that coat is only a small part of the important make up of these beautiful dogs and conformation is more important.

Just my opinion. I realise here members of the ES community from the UK have aired their views. However, just remember one thing. It is just my view that between you all, different views and different kennels you can all stand proud in one aspect. Currently there are some beautiful Irish Setters being bred in Europe and the UK. Val, although a pet owner and enthusiast, is the owner of some lovely dogs, Eva, Camilla, Dee etc etc etc and the list goes on and on have bred some stunners. Do not lose sight of that. I am off to work now and just hope my prisoners are not as lively as some on this forum :-). Love and hugs to you all. XXX

Who is to say who is more experienced or knowledgable?

You have no idea if any of us are more experienced or knowledgable than the next person!

As for calling Eva a Saint.........seeing as believes that she is the font of all knowledge on this site and nobody else's opinions count and some on here seem to worship her, I thought she might enjoy the title, after all it would make her feel even more superior!

I dont see the need for such heat or advice 'to keep out of the kitchen'. This is a public forum and as such it is expected that people show common courtesy for the right of an individual to express their opinions without being subjected to vitriolic attack by a member to another member Such actions are damaging to the enjoyment other members get from coming onto this site, to perhaps learn something. Be thankful that experienced members give of their time and wealth of experience for the benefit of newcomers.They have nothing to gain from sharing their experiences!

I may not have been a member of this site for as long as some others but I have owned Irish Setters since 1980 and although I don't show or judge them, I have attended championship shows as a spectator, followed the show results and learned about the breed and it's standard since I had my first puppy all those years ago. Therefore I don't feel I have to thank anyone.

I expressed an opinion at the start of this discussion but sadly, one breeder felt she had the right to reply to me and others as though we had no idea what were talking about. 

As she's a judge, well, let's excuse her sarcastic comments shall we...after all she has experience!

Val you ask who is to say how experienced or knowledgeable anyone is. Well all you have to do is go onto their webpage and read their resume and look at their blogs and photos.

From your webpage I see that you are trained in dog behaviour and are experienced and knowledgeable in that.  It is not my field of expertise and I would not presume to tell you your business.  You do not breed, you do not show nor do you judge Irish Setters.

I, on the other hand, have nearly 40 years experience of showing Irish Setters.  I have been judging since the 70's, I award cc's in the breed and will be judging at Crufts next year.  I have served on both regional and national Breed Clubs and on Canine Associations. I have had in total 16 litters.  I currently own the top sire in IS who was a top winning show dog himself.  All this information is on my webpage.

I will leave you to work out who has the greater knowledge and experience.  And I would respectfully reiterate that you cannot rock my world, no matter how much you try.

I think it is a great shame that in your endeavours to have the last word you have not only been insulting to me but you have also been rude to other members who have passed a comment.

Please believe me when I say that I don't care at all for your opinion of me nor would I bother to digest it..........sticks and stones Val..............hold that thought.
However, maybe you should feel some shame over your comments to Camilla and Finn because they didn't deserve your response but then, of course, there is no shame and where there is no shame there is also no sense and no feeling. Your loss Val.....I'm not bothered.....................
