Thus far I have never had a problem introducing a puppy to the group. You just need to keep an eye on them at first to make sure that the pup doesn't annoy the older dogs to the point of no return. My sixteen year old Gordon still tries to play with the puppies, I just make sure they don't get too rambunctious with her.
With adding an older dog to the mix you just need to make sure that they all know that you are the alpha dog and won't tolerate any unseemly behavior.
This is Crackers, my third generation National Field Champion. His coat has been shaved for competition. He is a great snuggler on the couch and so easy to live with.
