How long have you owned Irish Setters?
Portia was the first Irish I owned in 1975, however grew up with Joanmas Lollipop who we got in 1964.I regularly showed my mothers dogs from 1972.
About Me:
I love irish setters . I mainly have show dogs but have working irish as well which i train for field trialling.I have had a full champion CH Astleys Portia of Rua who was the first Irish to win BIS at CRUFTS in 1981 and a field trial champion FTCH Rua Connemara of Porschet.I have also owned and worked a Gordon Setter Lusca Black Shadow at Porschet and a Pointer Ferglen Feroda at Porschet who also won awards at field trials.I have also handled my mothers Irish Red and White setters at trials and have taken them shooting with me.I also have been successful with my show pointers. I am a championship show judge of Irish Setters and have also judged some field trials on Partridge and Grouse.Outside dogs i enjoy playing tennis, piano/keyboard/guitar and reading. This keeps me fairly occupied.

Hello Colette - welcome to the site.
I have of course judged your Irish at Bath Championship Show, and I still have the beautiful framed sepia prints of Portia, available after her Best In Show, Crufts win, in 1981.
    Cheers,
    Myra.

    Hi there Collette
Oh yes you will get quite addicted to it. I find I have to ration myself to it...There are a few debates on the Forum that get quite heated, Hunting v Showing, you can probably see it from both sides, I have just taken one of my girls to a Working lesson, she did really well, but wants to chase the birds all the time, unfortunately I have never thought that I would work her, so she has been aloud for 31/2 years to chase birds....any suggestions???? Nice to speak to you, speak soon Dee and the girls

    Hi Colette!
As an accident I happened to see that you are on this site.
We met some 10 years ago in England together with Per and Tina.
Hope everything is good with you and your dogs!
At the moment my wife Maria and I have 6 dogs
3 Irish setters and 3 English setters.
3 of them are Champions and 5 are winnerclassdogs on huntingtrials.

Thanks for kind words about our Irish! Kennel Discovery, own by Barbro and Bo Rehn, started breeding Irish 1982 mainly based on Clonageeralines and later on they also breed from Thendaradogs. For more information please visit the website, www.kenneldiscovery.se We have big expectations about this last litter with MIller and Siofra. Will put photos here at site later on.

What an achivement to win Best In Show at Crufts!!!! I hope you will add some photos from that moment. Best Wishes Jenny

    Welcome to this fascinating setter-site!
I'm looking forward to seeing some pictures of your dogs at work. Somewhere I have a lovely photograph of I think Flame of Tara (?) . must look in my old albums and get it scanned for you.
I was in POD's training course and would have loved to see more Irish, but sadly Glen was the only one there...
    wishing you all the best
    Susan

    Hi Colette!
On my pictures from high up in Sweden my dogs are pointing grouse(the Swedish grouses are white in the winter)
Per & Tina still have lines from England and are doing quite well.
  • Carmel Murphy

Welcome Colette! I have always admired your dogs and love the fact you come from both sides of the setter world!!;o)
  • Carmel Murphy

I agree Colette! My dogs would prefer to be in the field than in a show ring!! I have never done formal training but I have always encouraged them to look for birds while out in woods or in fields etc!! Sometimes with a bit of success! The instinct is so strong! When we finish in the ring at IKC in Dublin the reward is a run in the open area where the smells are great for dogs! Megan sometimes wants to skip the show part and starts walking towards the open area instead!!;o)

    Hi Colette
I felt for you at Crufts, I think that you are a few days ahead of me as to the throaty chesty cough, you were barking well, As for the IrnBru I can't drink anything else, only trouble is that you could dye your clothes with it. I got some on my white wool hat and I CAN'T get it out, so what does it do to your stomach......still it tastes good...
Next time you should have a proper drink...do you do out other Scottish drink....'Whiskey'???
Speak soon Dee and the girls
  • Dee Rance

Thank you so much for that, as you say it is always special getting a place at Crufts, have only had a couple of 3rds before.
I will keep a bottle of Irn-Bru in the car for the next time we meet and you can have a whole bottle...Dee and the girls

Hi Collette, thanks for your comment about Glen.
That is just what he is like: he enjoys every second of life and is such a happy dog, he loves to work, he loves to run... he's always full of life.
And obviously I love him just the way he is!
Hope to meet you sometime with your working setters,
    all the best
    Susan
  • Michelle Webster

    Hi Collette,

Thanks for that. I always thought he was gorgeous but then I'm biased cos I was his mummy! It's lovely to know that other people liked him too.
    Best wishes,
    Michelle
  • Henk ten Klooster

Thanks for your remarks on the EC working Irish setters. My Fiona (sister to Fay) in the USA had pups from a Swedish male descending from your Rua lineage. So I enjoy everything you write about them!!!
    Regards-Henk.
