It is amazing how they know. My first Irish, when it was getting very close to the end of his life, the cats used to sleep up against him (it was winter and I am assumed they did this to keep him warm and because they 'knew' he was dying as if they were offering him comfort by their close contact) and one would wash him. When he died and our Labrador bought at the same time and was the same age (13) was grieving for his best mate, the cats slept with him. The cats had never done this before or later on. The cats comfort didn't seem to help with his grief (not eating, obviously heartbroken) . It was only after another Irish came into our life and then he was happy again. He lived to almost 18 years of age. He came out to Australia with the Irish from where we'd been living in England (Norfolk and then London).
RIP handsome boy.
Am thinking of you Gayle & Lionel, sad times
