Made my way toward the eruption on Fimmvörðuháls between glacier Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull last night. The plan was to hit the twilight zone in order to capture
colorful images and the dramatic scenery that can be visualised in
Iceland at these hours of the day. After having crossed several rivers
and struggled through it´s
...ice on my nearly new 4x4 Landcruiser locked
on all wheels to master the terrain we made it to the destination in
Fljótshlíð only a short distance from the eruption but far enough to
stay safely away but for outstanding visibility. Super low temperatures
caused by the northerly wind originating from the Greenland glacier made
our fingers near instantly feel nothing. Gloves were a must but I had
forgotten mine so I had to keep my 4x4 running and jump in to the warm
every 3 minutes. After having been there for only a few minutes the
Icelandic radio reported that a new volcano had just erupted near the
first one. During the report the Iceland coastcard heli landet in front
of us to set out some crew members to rescue travelers who had been
surprised by the new eruption and had no way out anymore. They were
saved. It was a truly amazing experience that we will never forget. The
attraction is just IT. - Enjoy
