Exclusively Setters

Just spotted this comment on the Crufts 2014 website

http://www.crufts.org.uk/news/dog-breed-more-rare-giant-panda-falls...

"The Kennel Club’s list of vulnerable native breeds monitors those native dog breeds whose numbers are below 300 puppy registrations each year, which is thought to be a suitable level to sustain a population. An ‘at watch’ list monitors those between 300 and 450 registrations per annum that could be at risk if their numbers continue to fall.

In total there are 25 vulnerable native breeds, including the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Dandie Dinmont Terrier and Deerhound, and eight ‘at watch’ breeds, including the Irish Setter and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi."

Really? Have puppy registrations fallen?

ohh noo... such a sad news !

Surely you mean the 'English Setter'?  The Irish Setter is not a UK native breed but 'Irish' depending on the Irish Kennel Club;

My Irish is registered with the Kennel club in England,I think a dog is registered to the Kennel Club where it was bred.

Irish Red and Whites are the ones at risk and English are on the at watch list.I think Irish are safe!

I think that some of this could be down to people allowing there dogs to have litters older than the advisable age, so the kennel club will not register them. Why I  say this is on facebook this week an Irish had a litter at 8 ( only 2 pups) and a comment from someone else said their dog had a litter at 9. I have always believed that between 2 and 5 is ideal, but that is another topic.

Just to clarify: These are not my own words. I copied the above passage straight from the Crufts website and included the link so you can read the article. I assumed the writer had made a mistake and was indeed referring to either the IRWS or ES but wanted to check whether anyone knows anything I don't.

I am looking at the KC registrations numbers for 2013 as printed in Dog World Feb 14, 2014.

Irish Setter (red to avoid confusion) 859

English Setter 326

Gordon Setter 273

Irish Red and White Setter 82

So the Irish are not at risk!

Frances,

as Northern Ireland is in the UK and has breeders of Irish setters, I suppose the Irish Setter is considered a native Breed in the UK! :-)

Hello Catherine

Hope pups are well

No the Irish is a native Irish breed and the standard depends on the Irish Kennel Club; But in the UK there is a UK standard; bit complicated in a way,

Yes the Irish Red Setter is very much an Irish Breed ;) And Catherine, the North of Ireland is still part of the island of Ireland (just politically part of the UK ;) ) We have 9 native breeds here ;) Irish Terrier, Kerry Blue Terrier, Irish Wolfhound, Irish Red Setter, Irish Red and White Setter, Glen of Immal Terrier, Irish Water Spaniel, Kerry Beagle and Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier ;)
