PRA rcd4 RESULTS

As an interim measure until the official register provided by the Kennel Club is fully up and running, the SEISC has decided to offer an opportunity for owners to post their recent PRA rcd4 DNA test results.
This will be on our PRA rcd4 page.
This is available to all owners worldwide not just SEISC members and will be in a similar format to that already used by the Kennel Club.

Mel I am sorry to learn that your 'kids' are not all clear. But as you say with Ralph Lauren being affected carriers are good...I feel that there are so many good dogs/bitches that are carriers...we are going to have to use them and yes even affected...in an ideal world clear to clear would be the way to go but you are so rite in saying that you urge people not to discard carriers...good luck with your 'kids' as they are the same dogs that you had before you got the results...

Mel, what a relief for you that finally the results have come through and you can now plan accordingly.

 

I agree carriers should be used for breeding for a long time yet so as to avoid further loss of genetic diversity caused in the past by the overuse of pupular sires and general inbreeding practices. Obviously all health tests available should be used by conscientious breeders all over the world - be they from the working or the show fraternity.

Please don't give up!! it is breeders who care about our lovely Irish Setters that will do what is best to make them all they can be in the future!  I hate seeing the results come back not clear for so many of these beautiful dogs but from a "pet owner" reading all this even I have learned a wee bit that sounds like all these lovely Irish Setters don't need to be just discarded as future parents of puppies....just planned about to make the best choices for the puppies and the Irish Setter Breed as a whole!  I just thank all of you who are taking the time to do what is best for our wonderful Irish Setters.

I guess the biggest disaster genetically will be if a significant  number of breeders decide to drop out of the breed , and their dogs are lost to the gene pool, actually a worse situation than knowing one has carriers but working out how to breed around the problem without losing diversity. I think this is what Susan and others are saying too

And however difficult things  may feel at the moment for Irish Setter breeders, at least you know exactly where you stand. In IRWS all we know is that we have some LOPRA affected dogs in the breed, but we still dont know who they are, and have no DNA test available. So we are breeding in the dark, not knowing which dogs could be carriers or affected. It makes me very wary of using a stud dog outside my own breeding or buying in a new puppy at the moment, and longer term that isnt a good thing The other alternative is not to breed at all until we have a DNA test available, and with only ten or so litters a year being bred in the UK, that isnt a good thing either.

Mel, I think most will carry on and I hope you do to.  As for those that are still mating untested bitches to untested dogs all we can hope is that when they eventually decide to test their results do not impact unduly on their puppies. 

Yes, things can be difficult for Irish Setter breeders at the moment but we shall prevail.  We are in a far better position than IRWS's for whom there is no DNA test at and we all hope that it will be forthcoming in the not too distant future.  This is why breeding from untested stock when there is a simple DNA test available seems so very irresponsible. Surely there cannot be any excuses.

mel gad the wait is over for you and maybe not the ones you wantedfor which im truly sorry but me you know all is not lost.please dont stop your breeding programme the breed needs people like you more than ever now whose vast experience can help eradicate it from these beautifu dogs
