How long have you owned Irish Setters?
30 years
About Me:
I got my first setter when I was 18years old. Not kowing much about buying a pedigree dog I chose to get my 1st one from Gamston Kennels in Nottinghamshire. I studied the breed first and saved up, as my parents would not let me have a dog until I was 18yrs old. As a child I suffered badly from Ashma and was not allowed furry pets. My Irish Red Setter arrived and it was not until I had had him for 4 months that the vet told me he had a problem with his eyes..
A lovely lady from Ossett, West Yorkshire, a Mrs Lennox took me all over with my puppy and it was finally discovered that 'Red' had PRA. I contacted Gamston Kennels to tell them, I was told to send him back and they would chose another one for me. Needless to say I did not. It was only later in life I realised that Gamston Kennels dealt in all types of breeds and was somewhere I now would chose not to go to. I decided to get a playmate for Red and got in touch with Mr & Mrs James of Wendover Kennels, I visited them and bought a beautiful Red Setter 'Sweet Sauce of Wendover' (Kerry). What a difference in the two, breeding really made me realise to chose more wisely in future. After losing Red at the age of 8yrs and Kerry at the age of 14yrs, I got my first Red & White Setter 'Glenoshea Defiant'. I fell in love with this lovely breed as the characteristics were very similar but also so very different from the Red Setter. I must say that all the Red & White Setter people I have met have been lovely and have helped we with my latest Red & White, freely giving advice and encouragement.

Hi Jean, you are so right- it is if setters weave a magic spell about us! I am about to get my fifth setter, but my springer is equally as gorgeous, if a lot more hard work!! :0)

Hi Jean.

The thick towelling coat I use was purchased from the 'Country Mun' store.   You can see these on their website.
