Celebrating a Setter Centennial 2: Hartsbourne History

Many words are written over Hartsbourne and their first breeder mrs Eileen Walker. But not many pictures are published apart from traditionals (shows). Celebrating a Setter Centennial means sharing, so here on request some from around 1950. They were made by a Dutch baroness, visiting the kennels in Foresters, Stanmore Common. Most Irish, nowadays umpteen times in extended pedigrees were pictured like Popsy, Tobias, Masterstroke, Meadowsweet (above), Sweetness and Flame. Last was a legendary shower of hail: small white dots all over a redcoat. Enjoy! (Under: mrs Eileen Walker with pups, 1950)

A Dutch visitor apparently enjoying to be photographed.

Hartsbourne Sweetness, one of the two lucky house-dogs.

Hartsbourne Masterstroke.

If you want to see more - Popsy, Penny, Tobias, Masterstroke and Flame plus the American Hartsbourne Senor of Shadowood- tell it and I'll scan them.

Calm, piece and happiness is seen on all the pics you have posted, Henk. They show me a world, a house and a garden that I wish to live in. Not mentioned the Irish Setters making complete the pics.
Many thanks for sharing this piece of history of the breed. Appreciated very much.

Your enthusiasm is inspiring, Birgit, Myra, Camilla, Dee, Carmel, Ursula, Katariina, Melinda, Drago/Beata, Sharyn & Marta. Theres a lot in that one word "normal", Katariina. And yes Marta, what setterfancier does not dream of one lucky day.... Follow up next week: Stepping into Setterparadise, highlighting descendants. Hope for your prolonged enthusiasm!!!

Carmel I'll do my best, but its a Dutch setterparadise, descendants of Hartsbourne Hallmark (Tobias x Popsy) who became eighteeen years of age, eldest Irish setter I've known. Highlighting as well Irish Derrycarne Harp , the kennel concerned is O 'Cuchulain after the old Irish legend. Interested?

Elke, a picture of shower of hail Flame was first published on Working Setters and quite a few people stayed up all night to see it half a century after her life.... Not long after that one was published in Irish Setters Today written by Eve Gardner. On the map of old Ireland see www.Iersesetter.com you can see where those showers lived. They already dived up in French Park Setters, our eldest strain. It inspired my fascination for white on red. Flame (Irish bred) was a sister of a Derrycarne Irish show champion, duals. There was an article on shower of hails once in Irish Times.

Still interested!! Still related through Popsy and Tobias to Rua and now on both sides of Abbey's pedigree(even if a long way back!!!) But I am interested in all old photos regardless of relationship to mine;o))

Sounds you're a setterhistory fancier Elke. Yes, Martini, not many fanciers know that... And a few Irish shown here were behind German hunting champions Barko and Bjorn vom Eisenhammer.

Are those German lines back to 19th century still alive? Aha Dutch ancestry, so Stepping into Setterparadise might be intresting???

Temptation - well what I like best is how T.H. White UK (The Goshawk) describes his Irish setter and Horace Lytle USA his Smada Byrd (Breaking a Birddog).

I love to look way back on Rua's pedigree and see the old, simple names dogs had then!! Like Young Phil and Norah, Pretty Norah,Maureen's Brenda,Brilliant Bob,Mike of Boyne,Come up Tipp,or Henmore Shotover etc......
Very simple but tell a little story too!;o)).
