Home for Irish Setter Lovers Around the World
These three cuties are 5 week old Rafeiros Alentejanos, a portuguese cattle/guard breed. They are very young, but their mum is a sheep dog, and earlier this week decided she had done enough parenting, left her babies behind and has been living with her herd ever since! I decided it was best for them to be around people and other dogs, instead of being alone, hiding out most of the time, so they have come to live with us for the time being!
When they are old enough, one of the brothers and the sister will leave to their new homes, and our boy will become our very own guard dog/ sheep dog.
He does not have a name yet, and we are having trouble finding a suitable fruit or vegetable to name our new boy, but I'll be sure to post our final decision. For now, I proudly present our new boy:
They do look cute, Teresa! Though I am sure they will look big and frightening in a year or so and will scare away any wolves that may come close to the sheep.
Mum leaving them at five weeks may even have a positive effect in this case. I'm sure they will benefit greatly fom being socialised with people and being in a family environment. This vital 5 to 12 week period is too important to be missed and you will be helping them develope a balanced behaviour later in life. Well done!
