What is your favourite settersong, -book, -movie, -history, -photo and -story?

Wondering while reading your posts: what is your favourite settersong, -book, -movie, -history, -photo and -story and why?

My favourite settersong is “Abergavenny,” on a picturesque town in Wales. Shannon sings praise on a red setter in this 1969 hit if I'm correct and reportedly there was an Irish setter on stage as well. Closely followed by Start me Up (Rolling Stones), could be a good song for start of a working day.

Book - The trilogy Big Red, Irish Red and Outlaw Red by Jim Kjelgaard (USA) Closely followed by T.H. White: The Goshawk. Because they portray adeventures with working Irish setters. Closely followed by the more recent UK one (inspired by Kjelgaard) for kids on an Irish setter aboard of the Titanic.

Movie - Walt Disneys Big Red. I've never seen the Bonanza-series with an Irish setter in it so this one might be still be beaten.

History - the giant task a few people set themselves up with in the fifties to restore the Irish setter into former fieldglory in the USA as portrayed in The Modern Red Setter. Closely followed by The New Irish Setter (Thompson) as you can see how the Irish setter changed from an athlete into a showclown.

Photo - The kid that was saved from a burning car by an Irish setter in St. Louis. I've still got the picture.

Story - A short story of Colin Mc Kelvie (Ireland) on working Irish setters all year around. In it is decribed work on all kinds of game so not only specialist stuff (feathers). Closely followed by a short Internet-story on Clancy howling all of the village at the time his owner was shot in Vietnam.

Whats yours?

Has anyone read the novel,   " I, Malcolm"  by Blaize Clement? It's about a family's Irish Setter that witnessed their child's kidnapping. Years later, he spotted the kidnapper and was fatally shot. He comes back in spirit to attempt to reunite his family with their child. I'm only about half way through the book, but it's been a good read.

Sounds like my sort of book Kimberly, I think that I will get a copy for summertime reading in the garden, watching my lovely girls sunbathing. Let you know if this turns out to be a favourite of mine, thank you for sharing <:0)

It would be great for that Angela. It's told in the first person through Malcolm so it's an easy read. I got the kindle edition;  I really like "books" but have found that I can read the Kindle in bed with the lights out and no loud page turning to disturb my husband. : )

Thanks for the tip, Kimberly! Reading an article about the death of the author Blaize Cement in the Herald Tribune makes the story even more dramatic. http://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20110727/ARTICLE/110729607?p=3... This tells "Clement's e-book, "I, Malcolm," written from the perspective of a dog in heaven"....."was written after her cancer diagnosis."

Thanks Henk. I just happened to run across the e-book, so I hadn't read about the author yet.

What I find fascinating is the inspiration of authors. I guess this photo inspired lots of setterlove and maybe authors.

I know, I had never seen this until you posted it awhile back....I just love it!!!

Keep some tissues handy while reading this book, Angela! You'll laugh....then you'll cry....then you'll laugh...

Hi Kimberly, when you first posted this book I googled it to see if I could find it, I can only find it as an E.book and I like to hold a real paper book so donn`t have a kindle. This is not the first time this has happened and I may have to come into the 21 centery and get one, this will be the first book I shall bye. Thanks for the info <:0)

Took Dougal for his Vet visit on Friday and our Dr. said that it was the BIG RED stories that first got him interested in becoming a Vet. : )  He said you don't see them much around here anymore but coincidentally, Dougal was the second IS patient that day!  He just loves the breed.

I have only seen Big Red once many moons ago, but have just found it on U tube, a must to watch again so no dinner this evening. I may make an exception and give my Big Red his dinner!

Enjoy Valerie. We found it on DVD and it gets played once every winter. Snugg on the couch with my two reds.
