Media highlight Irish setter as a sick animal

The image of the Irish setter got another big blow in Dutch media this week because a breeder was fined to pay 6000 euro for selling and subsequently denying primary epilepsy in a dog. Nearly all media, from national television to dailies and social media focused on this. Last year it was only television, now the impact is way broader. What do you think, is there a way to get out of this misery? And how?

Something else, the Dutch database isn't complete. The ABC will only add health issues with permission of the owner.

Hi Henk, if as Mr Jansen says, a file has been retained by an ex committe member then isn't that theft and that the file should be returned forthwith.  Good excuse to say records incomplete, then GET THEM BACK.  I don't understand why he is so secrative, if he knows something, report it.   The comment from BHA about being cautious because of slander is rubbish.  Sam's breeder was taken to court because it was a fact.  Publishing or advising people of the pedigree of Ellen's friend's dog's epileptic attack last evening is indisputable.  I guess having it confirmed by a vet that the dog is suffering now from this illness before publishing might be sensible but really this is going to be such an uphill struggle with rocks on the back.  There is so much resistance from the "precious" owners of show setters.  They haven't taken on board that because of the number of show puppies bred means that inevitably there are going to be higher incidences of illness in puppies bred thus.  Working puppies are not bred in the same numbers, they must know this or are they just being difficult?  Anything to deflect the health issues, I think it is called diversion tactis or am I just being the silly one now!!!  I loved every minute of owning setters and SHOWING so I am not biased toward working setters.   So frustrating.   The most stupid thing about all this is that Show owners will not be able to have beauty parades unless they address health issues.  They'll have killed them off because of their denial.   They have to participate and help.

Mr Jansen, if you have the facts please let other setter lovers know what it is, implication of fact is absolutely pointless and you have wasted your time blogging Henk.  However, if you reveal your facts then you have not wasted your time and it reassures me that you have a genuine love and concern for the breed, and it will have the same affect on other bloggers.   Henk is not trying to score points about what he knows or doesn't know, he is in fact, fact finding for the benefit of the breed.  Please wake up to this and any ill feeling you may have towards others who are trying to get resolution please bury it and open your heart.

Georgina, as for disappearance of files in fact a whole system I fully agree with you, they should be returned. By the way that member also reads this topic regularly so maybe...

So here I agree fully with mr Jansen! It makes you deadsick knowing that property that probably cost a lot of money and energy and can be of help, is missing! If the rest of the post is meant to say let's cooperate for a healthy future for the Irish setter, I agree as well. But is it?

Henk....don't go down the private email route, give us names.....this concerns everyone who owns or is thinking of owning a IS.  As you said "don't keep secrets"    Show them up for what they really are please!.

If it's fact and not malicious or defamatory....in common law it's not slander.

Tres bon, c'est magnifique!!  Absolutement!

Dear Ann what do you want from me? or do you have some questions about the IKC outcrosse pups that i bred ?

Regards Gerard

Yes, Angela. Let's hope something good comes from misery.

Thank you Angela, I will read it later.

Anne I am missing a link here. On what message are you replying? For more info about epilepsy and how it should be diagnosed, here is the article from Paul Mandigers again: Epilepsy in dogs and cats.
