Could some one tell me what the average height is for a 9 month old Irish Setter bitch.

My girl is 24" at the shoulder but when she stands next to other setters she seems a bit under size.

She has all UK and Europian blood lines and in Australia we have a lot of Setters with American lines which seem taller than UK dogs.

Thanks for any information.

Graham.

Hi Graham!! The FCI (Irish/European)standard for bitches is between 21.5" and 24.5", so sounds like your girl is on the taller side of the scale;o)) My bitches are all just over 24"

Thank you for that, I am totally amazed. What is the FCI for dogs?

Irish in Australia seem to be a lot taller, and my two seem to be immature next to them. it must be the American influence on the breed. you must be up very early in Ireland.

Thanks for that Michelle,

my girl is a very fine bitch. I knew there was no height standard in Australia but I was trying to get an idea of what the average height is for that age.

Hi Graham

I think it is difficult to compare when puppies can grow at different stages.  I have always used rule of thumb that the pups height at 12 months, you can expect up to an 1inch more by the time they are 18 months and it has worked out pretty well for me.

I had a boy who grew extremely quickly in his earlier months and we thought he would be a giant, but he slowed right down after about 9months.  I think it depends on the lines as not all lines grow at the same rates and so as to whether you can make a good determination, then depends on how well you know the lines.
From my experience, the UK lines take longer to mature, so they will look less mature than some of the lines you will see here in Australia.  Your girl may not be much shorter, but her immaturity may make her look so much younger.... by the time she's 3-4 years old....... you just gotta be patient :-)
My 4 1/2 year old boy is just starting to "body up" and some dogs half his age from other lines here in Aus, look just as mature as him!!!  I can wait..... it's certainly worth waiting for!!!

Hope this helps.

cheers

Cheryl
