Below is a copy of a message I received today. I have not checked any of the links as yet. I thought it may interest some of you. I have no idea if this is true or false.

Posted to the ShowDogs-L list, March 5, 2012, X-post permission for
everything, pass it
on to other lists or anywhere else appropriate.

(The truthaboutpetfood.com site cited below is a very interesting site.)

At the end of December, a local kennel  donated 12 cases of Kirkland canned
Lamb and Rice dog food. They said it was too rich for their dog because
they
all got sick. Did not think any problem with the food. I fed to my dogs,
and
to visiting dogs. Diarrhea for all dogs, puppy threw up 15 times. She
survived...Tesla and Dino did not. I contacted the company on Jan.3 to say
all dogs got sick. They said they did not produce that food. Four weeks
later, one dead dog, next week, another dead dog. Finally got a response
with...tell Costco. I contacted Costco, and then they contacted the
manufacturer. Who wants a sample of the food. Mind you...this similar food
was recalled in 2007-2009 for melamine contamination. Over 400 dogs died. I
filed a report and waiting for request for the sample of food.

I need to put out a warning of possible food contamination. ...is not
verified yet...but the vet and I feel it will be. The*Kirkland Canned Lamb
and Rice with expiration 2013. The cans I have say June 23, 2013*. Please
let your friends know. It would have been purchased in Nov.-Dec. 2012.
Please anyone that has a can to contact me directly. Do not return to
Costco. We need to let everyone know so more dogs don't die.

FDA Testing of Jerky Treats

I've been provided with a document sharing what the FDA has been testing
for - since 2007 - on jerky treats. Up to mid-November, 2011, the FDA had
received 353 reports of illness or death believed to be related to the jerky
treats (in 2011). From mid-November to present, the number of complaints
reported to FDA has almost doubled to 596 (in less than three months). And
this is what the FDA has been doing...

Reports of possible problems with Kirkland Dog Food

Word is spreading fast of possible links to Kirkland canned dog foods (sold
at Costco) to sick and dying dogs. No independent laboratory testing has
been done on the food - yet. However I've emailed with one pet owner who
lost two dogs believed to be linked to the canned food and have heard of
several others.

Could well be true.  Diamond Pet foods who make this food did recall food in the years mentioned above after 400 dogs died.  They had sold 6,540,240 tins of the stuff!!

This is such dreadful news - thank you for sharing. I am so sorry for all those poor dogs - owners must be

devastated. How did all get past quality control?

Its when I hear something like this I am so glad that I prepare all my dogs meals myself and know what they are eating...also having a good meat and bone supplier that I trust.

I feel for those owners and more so for the dogs.....:0(

Likewise Jennie slowcooker is on most days chicken breast, shin of beef broccoli, potatoes if it's ok for us then it's ok for our boys. I really do not trust any commercially produced pet food.

My friend told me about this yesterday...... and they say us raw feeders are poisoning our dogs !!!!!  If you do a search on Pet Food Withdrawals, this problem is far more widespread.  Unfortunately most vets in the UK don't look at dry foods being the blame for toxicity problems, they just assume the dog must have picked up something nasty whilst out on a walk!.  Rawhide chew are a problem too. What hide are they made from??? how many people know that a vast number of them are imported from  CHINA !

Oh Cornelia

A recipe that needs to be shared I feel lol..

My dogs love fish 4 dogs sea jerky, however I am rather concerned about that now.  Just before Christmas I found a lump of metal in one of the bags.  They were the small cube shaped jerky (they usually have the large ones)  the lump of metal was the same shape as the jerky AND the same color. I picked it up, went to put it into Daisy's mouth and just as she opened her mouth I pulled it back realizing what I had in my hand.

I obviously complained to FFD's and at the time I asked them where they manufactured them. I was told various sources abroad but wouldn't elaborate on that, so from the silence I think they have something to hide :-/

We had a huge scandal in SA concerning melamine contamination of pet food some years ago, resulting in serious health problems and deaths for many dogs and cats.  It transpired that millars had purchased rice from China (where apparently there was little quality control) and supplied it to the factories in SA producing petfood.  Many previously reliable pet products were withdrawn from the shelves and even buying bags of rice for home preparation was suspect at the time.

Since then regulations have been put in place to avoid a re-occurance both here and we are told in China , but not before it transpired that melamine had been added to human baby milk powder!  The reason given for the practice was to enhance protein content. It is my opinion that there should be a world ban on the addition of melamine to any consumable product.

I agree 100 per cent with every word.

Rawhide chews never in a million years would they have those.

Unless I know what it is and where its from they dont have it...

Cash had part of a rawride roll one night and wound up sick for over a week with vomitting.  Can't do those anymore either now.  A lady at the park yesterday told me she only uses raw bones from her butcher.  She happened to be out of them and to save time bought a hickory basted type bone you see in the grocery stores often.  Her dog had a bad reaction to it and his mouth and throat swelled badly.  Emergency vet and steriods and 500.00 later her dog is okay now but the store she bought it from just brushed it off.  They are a huge chain and I told her she has to contact their corporate headquarters to report his and not rely on just a store manager to handle it.  He didn't care!  They said he might of just had an allergic reaction to it, regardless it should be tested.  It might save other dogs from illness.

I get all my bones from my meat man its a large bag for £5 and they last them ages...and when I do go to a butchers to buy our meat I ask for a bone or two and they will give them for nothing...The only food I buy from a pet shop is rabbit food.

I scares me now to give the dogs anything from the shops unless its human grade meat and bones..

My old girls loved pigs ears but I dont buy them any more..Riley had one when he was younger and it went straight through him...

Same here Jennie. Meat only comes from trusted sources. If we let the butcher know when we are coming we get them for free too, including nice juicy chicken carcass.  They also like New Zealand lambs hearts too. Their faces are pure joy as they chomp into them.
