Exclusively Setters

Home for Irish Setter Lovers Around the World

As an interim measure until the official register provided by the Kennel Club is fully up and running, the SEISC has decided to offer an opportunity for owners to post their recent PRA rcd4 DNA test results.
This will be on our PRA rcd4 page.
This is available to all owners worldwide not just SEISC members and will be in a similar format to that already used by the Kennel Club.

For further details please see the Club website www.seisc.co.uk.

Listing will be available sometime today - slight kink in my "html"  !!

I have just got the results for Pra (rcd4) from the AHT.

SHANDWICK OBSESSION - CLEAR

(ShCh Scotselaw Jackson At Lynwood JW ex Shandwick Reason To Believe)

SANGARAH CONSPIRATION - CLEAR

(ShCh Caskeys Concept At Aoibheanne JW ex IntShCh Shandwick Obsession)

It means my first litter by Louis are all CLEARs. Namely:

SANGARAH COPYRIGHT

SANGARAH COCKRIDGE

SANGARAH CRACKERJACK

SANGARAH CONSPIRATION

SANGARAH COMPOSURE - all of them hereditarily CLEAR

This is the best result I could expect for my second litter out of ShCh Kerryfair Snow Fox JW ex Sangarah Conspiration all CARRIERS.

I am so very happy it isn't worse!! Still in tears with happiness!! Yippee!! :-))

THANK YOU ALL FRIENDS FOR THINKING OF US AND KEEPING YOUR EVEYTHING CROSSED FOR US!!!!

Excellent news for you both! Especially for you Marta as I can imagine how worried you were. A great relief for you.

Thank you Susan! Quite a relief, indeed! I didn't expect myself to get in tears when I read the mail, but it was such an emotional moment. I got so so delighted, and icing on the cake result came back in 7 days only, counting from the day they received the swabs!

Happy for you and yours too, and fingers crossed for those still waiting!!

A dna-test done by the Animal Health Trust has revealed today that the Irish setter dog Thomas (Echlin O’Conloch x Grouse) is a carrier for the pra rcd4. This reveals that the gene for pra rcd4 is likely to be present in working lines of Irish red (and white) setters, just like CLAD was in the recent past.

Hi Henk, interesting, I don't have the pedigree of Thomas in my mind but I'd assume this result shows that PRA rcd4 is not a recent mutation but has been around since the split of working & show lines. I know the breeders of IRWS are waiting for a test to become avalailable.

Correct Susan. Just like CLAD, I think that came from Moanruad Brendan (working) and a Wendover (show). Pedigree analysis learns it is in the case of Thomas probably from main lines of descent. That lineage is in both red and red and white setters.Since 2000 I had two litters both from an outcross no related setters in eight generations, that probably saved me from breeding carrier to carrier (and more).

The pedigree of Echlin and Grouse (see Harry) are on the Irish setter pedigree collection.

You interpreted (opinion) facts wrong. You write: a kennel that you don't like at all. I think (opinion based on experts) all inbreeding=linebreeding to whatever kennel=problems.

Priority number 1 according to experts: safeguarding diversity in lineage. This is not done in a competionscheme like shows (or: fieldtrials) where the winner takes it all and can be blind as well. Our lesson for this topic.

Very likely epilepsy, bloat, blindness, mega-oesophagus, immune-problems and a lot more problems in our breed come from Wendover, Hartsbourne, Moanruad (all related) because of the system to try to duplicate the best by inbreeding.

In dogsports linebreeding has been the Gospel for 1,5 century so it will not be easy to make changes. Your "gospel" was mine until reading experts in the years preceding 2000, what you consider to be a guess is documented.

PRA rcd 4 is easily eradicated. But what about the rest? What we need is (opinion) worldwide cooperation to save our breed.

Did John Nash really line breed the Moanruads? I think  that he bred a lot of dogs, but with a fair amount of diversity, and a lot of people wanted to buy Moanruads and they went all over the world. The linebreeding, especially by breeders in Europe, was done more by other people who bred Moanruads to Moanruads. John Nash seems to me more the kind of breeder who was constantly experimenting, discarding what didnt work so well, always wanting to move on, not the kind of breeder who kept on repeating the same old formula from the same dogs

And still today I think you will find less close  linebreeding in dogs in Ireland than in the UK, there is a stronger predjudice against it.

Right, he really made the difference in entering for the first time in a century totally new (old) blood, red and white Irish setters. Oh outcross?
Henk, where was the Wendover in Echlin"s pedigree?  I'm not familiar with the working lines LOL!

Just wanted to let you know that Thomas's pedigree is in my online pedigree database. Go to Menu and then Pedigrees at: www.hooley-irish-setters.co.uk

Thank you! As Henk said, lots of  Moanruads!
