Exclusively Setters

Home for Irish Setter Lovers Around the World

As an interim measure until the official register provided by the Kennel Club is fully up and running, the SEISC has decided to offer an opportunity for owners to post their recent PRA rcd4 DNA test results.
This will be on our PRA rcd4 page.
This is available to all owners worldwide not just SEISC members and will be in a similar format to that already used by the Kennel Club.

For further details please see the Club website www.seisc.co.uk.

Listing will be available sometime today - slight kink in my "html"  !!

Fantastic news for you Laura and Joanne! Sorry to post this so late! You must be both so relieved!

Joanne, wonderful that you put the effort and money into testing. Thank you for posting results. Hope others follow your good example down under.

Thanks Greg for this advice as I haven't seen this updated ANKC Regulation protocol in communications from our Member Body here in Queensland.  In fact, just checking Dogs Queensland Rules, the only reference to DNA testing in the Rules is in respect of determining disputes on litter parentage.  This is the current document on their website.

I certainly agree with the protocols that the ANKC have set to ensure integrity of the process.

I am interested to know if there is some progress towards mandatory health testing for Irish Setters in Australia.  I note in one document that there is comment that breed clubs are currently in the process to have Litter Registration Limitations in respect of CLAD testing for Irish Setters .  If so, why isn't PRA (both rcd1 and rcd4) included in this process. Is this being driven by the ISCV?

Currently there is no requirement to submit health results to our state body for inclusion for pedigree endorsement.  The current testing is not part of the ANKC DNA Program, but part of being responsible dog breeders and taking the initiative to have breeding stock tested now that this test is available.

I would be interested in further information.

Greg, could you give a link to these ANKC protocols, please?

I thought on the ISCV committee that you were saying the ISCV register could not be used for the same reason you are discussing now?

I agree with Pat.  I can't understand why breeders aren't testing for these tests.  I certainly applaud the work the ISCV are doing in progressing this process for our breed here in Aus.

Do you see that the ANKC will make this mandatory testing?  If so, then breeders will have to comply.

I would think the previous PRA and CLAD testing which we did many years ago would be acceptable as they were blood tests which were collected by our vets.

I think I would prefer a new set of tests be done to have my current dogs tested and then move forward with the hereditary status.  The difficulty with the current process of dogs being hereditarily clear is that there is no documentation to support their status as it is sometimes many generations ago that the testing occurred and the access to that documentation is difficult.  If pedigree endorsement is part of this process, then that would extremely valuable too.

I am very appreciative that breeders are testing for all including PRA rcd-4.

The request to go to breed survey had been going on for 9 years when I took it over as iscv club secretary. Time lines of approval had lapsed and it was finally taken up by Dogs Vic CEO to help get it started again. The problem I had was that information from the Vic health committee was coming back verbally through a committee member which did not arrive. Official correspondence is much easier to deal with. The request to go to breed survey has to be co ordinated with all clubs in Aust. That way it will go ahead much more smoothly.

Still I am glad that the breeder who I hope to get my next pup from went ahead and tested any way.

Could someone tell me if we can now test IRWS ? Can we use the same test as for the reds ? thanks for your answer !

Hello Cathy, the gene responsible for PRArcd4 has been found in Irish & Gordon Setters, but as yet not proven to be present in Red & Whites, however, if you want to test your R&W you can, just order the kit for the Irish. There might be a code for a 20% discount available in a the next few weeks, if I hear there is I'll let everyone know.

Don't know what happened to the Reply button on your post, Greg, so this will not be in the "proper" place LOL!

We have the same problem here in NZ - not all breeders have tested for rcd-1, or CLAD, so I suppose they won't test for rcd-4 either.  I simply cannot understand why people don't test - I would much rather know the status of my Setters than be putting my head in the sand with a "it won't happen to me" or "it's not a priority" attitude.

As I was not a member of the ISCV back then, I never submitted the certificates that I got for my dogs to the club.  Was there an open invitation to all Australian breeders to submit their results to the ISCV or is this listing only members' results?

If this listing is being used for the current process, can breeders still submit their certificates previously obtained?

Hi Greg.

I will do this, although the testing of my dogs back then won't be relevant for my breeding plans today, but I will also let a fellow breeder up here know as his results are relevant to his current breeding program.

Thanks
