Spring? No! Heavy rain, cold & windy... not a weekend you'd plan to spend outside tramping behind muddy dogs - but we did, and it paid off:
On Saturday
Coppersheen Dancing Light 'Dairine',11 months, owned by Heike, passed her Junior Field Trial (Jugendsuche) at a trial organized by the Verein f. Pointer u. Setter, Germany.
Just to make sure, she also ran in the Gordon Setter Club DE Junior Trials on Sunday. This time…

All right, Ursula, this is THE hare that was responsible for Glen almost winning the award for 'best hare course' of the week! Some people had been praising Glen for his obedience and excellent bonding. Little did they know...
One clear morning Glen stumbled across this furry beast... and took off, chasing the hare across an enormous stubble field towards a team of pointers who were happily quartering in the far field under perfect control…

On Saturday Dec. 6th we had the first 'Coppersheen International Field Day' in the Alsace, France. Six Irish of my breeding plus Duncan as a 'special guest' enjoyed learning a bit about setter work in the field. Four of the 'Ds' aged 7 months had their very first bird experience and they took to it like a duck to water... or a setter to the field;-))
We were a very international group with nationalities covering CH, F, D, H, SA and GB and…

I had the honour of being invited to judge at the international show in Rostock. The Landesgruppe of the Verein Pointer u. Setter made me very welcome and I had a super team to assist me in the ring. The atmosphere was very friendly and I would thank all exhibitors and helpers for making this a pleasant day.
It was a lovely end of day seeing the Irish Setter bitch Brilliant Bronze Siofra Little Elf winning the group.
(Sorry Laura, I do not have any photographs!)

Normally our dog training group (search & rescue training) spends their sunday morning in 'lowland' forests. Last weekend was special as we had a two day training session in the mountains of the Berner Oberland .
In Switzerland there is a competitive form of 'search and rescue' training where the dogs are trained to search an area for 'missing' people or articles with human scent. Our…

Glen and I had a wonderful opportunity of a training session in the field on Saturday. It is well over 4 months since the last training session and I was uncertain as to how he would hunt. We had a fantastic day with loads of wild pheasants, spring sunshine and a relaxed atmosphere. Glen had two good runs: on his first cast he pointed a very surprised hen pheasant and behaved perfectly, then the pheasants started to run, making it hard for the…

This lovely picture of Glen (and me...) appeared in the local newspaper last saturday. During a training session in the woods for 'search and rescue' I found an old coin or amulett with an engraving of St. George on one side and Jesus in a sailing ship on the other. The inscription said 'In Tempestate Securitas' (roughly: safety in the storm) Not knowing what to do with it I sent it to the local press. They did some research and said it was a 'St.…

Winter in Switzerland can mean glorious sunshine and snow - or it can mean a depressive damp 'greyness' under the fog. We are experiencing the latter... so today decided to load the dogs into the car and search for the sun. We live at around 400m above sea level and knew the sun was out at 1000m. We drove to the hills known as the Jura, hoping for a view of the swiss alps. Here are…

No luck this time for my dog Glen, the only Irish Setter entered at this summer trial held mainly in sugar beet. The pheasants refused to play the game and went away and hid;-))
Of 12 dogs entered in 'Solo' only one Pointer was placed. Disappointing for us, but hopefully better luck next time!…
