Home for Irish Setter Lovers Around the World

Hi,
I have seen the pictures of your pups, there gorgeous!
Obviously, you've seen my girl that looks like a mongrel rather than a pedigree Irish setter (which she is :-) ) I was looking for some advice really, Summer is in the vets with some sort of blood disorder. She is basically killing herself as she isn't producing and red blood cells. Her blood count is down to 8, which is obviously dangerously low!!!
I was wondering if you have ever come across this type of thing, that may help save her or give any advice, because the vets have absolutely no idea what it is and were struggling to keep her stable! I can't loose this little girl because she is my life! Thanks Sarah-Jayne xxx

if anyone has any advice on above please contact me at setterred@live.co.uk

thanks

So sorry to read about Summer. My first setter suffered from haemangiosarcoma - the first signs with her were a dangerously low red blood cell count - much lower than Summer. I hope & pray that this isn't the case for you but might be worth mentioning to your vet. I will be thinking of you. Good luck.

I am so sorry to read of Summer's blood disorder. I don't have any advice on this, but I hope you are able to get some really good advice and help your vet work out a plan to improve her condition. All the best.

Hi Jan it sounds like Summer may have an auto immune disorder. There is a wonderful support group that you might want to contact K9 Auto Immune Support. I have been a member for two years when Scout became ill with SLE. Their email is K9Auto-ImmuneSupport@yahoogroups.com or you can go to their website also. I hope your girl gets better soon.

Jan, It could be autoimmune haemolytic anemia and with the blood level down as low as 8 i would think summer might need a blood transfusion. I know some irish setter have had this in the past , I hope it isn't.

T his certainly sounds like I M H A to me having experienced this with one of my bitches a while ago your vet should have her on a drip with a concoction of drugs and if she makes it then on steroids for a very long time.
I do hope for you she pulls through its a long hard road to go down we had Paige on steroids for nearly a year and blood tests every 2 weeks once she came out of the hospital. My thoughts are with you and Summer.xxx
