How many Irish Setters do you have?

How long have you owned Irish Setters?
Since I was three years old, with just a few years off in the middle
About Me:
I am a third generation Irish fancier - for my Granddad and Dad there has never been another breed of family hunting dog. When I was just three years old my father went to the SPCA to get a "small dog" for the family and came home with a beautiful Irish Setter who was the victim of a divorce. She was registered as Lady Barbara of Shannon. Wasn't Barbie a fitting name for a little girl's Irish? Barbie was with us for nearly 16 years and was not only our family's companion but my father's hunting dog as well. As an adult I did dabble in Belgian Tervuren for a few years before returning to my "roots" so to speak.

I farm in British Columbia. In addition to the dogs, I have a Paso Fino, a Pervuvian X Pso and a Peruvian Paso. I am active in conformation, field events and obedience trials with my Irish Setters, and am really striving to produce a line of Irish that is first and foremost a great family dog and is also equally at home in the show ring or the field.

Pups, Meg, Jack and Hope

Posted on March 2, 2011 at 11:42am 0 Comments

Yesterday we ran Meg and the young pups off of horseback.  Meg is nearly a year old but since life has been so busy, I've only had her out twice before.  She was fabulous!  Independant and going the right places and also handled and turned when I asked her to.  I am sooo pleased with her.  The pups were put out in twos with older pups and they also ran really well.  I was only slightly hurt that they did not really NEED me!  LOL!  They all came when called at the end though, and they really…

Sad time and What a Nice Litter!!

Posted on February 12, 2011 at 9:36pm 6 Comments

December 27th, 2010 my father passed suddenly after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  It was a very sad time for us as a family, but we did have a wake for him where family and friends had a good time remembering this honourable gentleman.  Denis Lowry Russell instilled in me my love of Irish Setters making me a third generation Irish fancier.  We had a slide show for Dad showing him with his Irish Kelly when Dad was a boy.

I am currently on the road.  I went to Phoenix with…

Pups and Life changes

Posted on November 23, 2010 at 3:00pm 4 Comments

Hello Everybody! There are many changes at Russell Irish Setters currently. Ken and I are splitting up, so much of my time has been spent dividing belongings and dealing with legal issues. Prior to the decision to part ways I had planned a litter and they arrived 3 weeks ago just to liven things up!

It is a lovely litter of 13!!! They are by Chukarhill Burn Notice out of Can Ch Russell's Grapevine. Tate is a dog that has impressed me from day one. He is an absolute sweety and…

Finally a photo of Candy

Ken helped me take a few photos yesterday so that I had photos of Candy and Rhonnan on my website. This is the one he took of Saeterelva's Candy for Russell's and next is Russell's Kelly Green - Rhonnan, the dog I got back from the lady I sold him to. He had terrible flease when I got him back, but he is doing well now and looking for a new home.

It was the first day we'd done bird… Continue

It seems that I do once yearly posts! I've been on a couple of discussions, but was on dial up internet for three years, so not active on this list so much because the site takes forever on dial up. Anyway now we have a high speed stick so I can surf more.

Since I was last here Raisin has become Can Am DC Can AFTCH Highfeather Raise 'N A Ruckus Can FDX CD Am MH CD! She is the first Canadian Dual Champion in about 60 years and the first ever Can Am Dual Champion! I am really proud of… Continue

Hi Susan and welcome to the site. Isn't this fun! I've been doing setters for so long, it's hard for me to write a short summary. And of course I love to tell (and listen to) good stories about the dogs. This breed is so special! Bring on the tales!

Yes we have a few babes here! We are awaiting this year's final babies, two ewes left to lamb out, then weaning the older ones begins...one time I am glad we still live at the farm down the road! NOISY time! I'll add a photo of Ken with Aiko taking her first steps - she has grown so much in two weeks, but oh so cute! Of all the babies I have to say she is the cutest. She plays tag with us!

Hi Susan, I have been reading the "Hybrid" discussion with great interest and I was very interested in your comments, so I had to have a look at your dogs. Your current dogs are lovely. I would be interested in knowing their pedigrees. I went onto your website, but the link to one of the pedigrees isn't working.
I live in Australia and I don't do field work with my dogs (we live too far away from the nearest training/trialling area and with work and family commitments,,) but I am extremely interested in the need worldwide to breed healthy strong IS who don't look extreme in either show or field types.

Hi Susan, thanks for your answer in the topic about 'hybrid setters'. I didn't answer earlier because I was quite busy waiting for our second daughter birth and since finally she born 29th of December, I scarcely find time to sit down. I'm very happy you like Jager's son and waiting impaciently for more news and photos!
