Exclusively Setters

Home for Irish Setter Lovers Around the World

I'd just like to say how much I would regret it if the few members interested in the working side of the breed left this site 'cause they felt their input is not welcome.
IMHO our setters have so many wonderful qualities and it is worth hearing about all of them. It would be to the detriment of this site were membership limited to only the one interest. For myself, I greatly enjoy reading about both the work and the show side. And what makes this site extra special is the possibility of sharing photographs from both spheres.

I agree with you Susan BUT it would be nicer if during some of these discussions (show v working) the tempo did not become so heated and some of the statements did not become so abusive and some time even rude and disrespectful.I am interested in all aspects of the Breed and indeed it is most interesting to see Irish Setters in all sort of different situations.
I agree with Catherine's statement about this Setter Site being for the benefit of ALL Setter owners, whether they are into Show, Working, Agility, Obedience, etc etc. We should just have a love of ALL things to do with our lovely four Setters and be interested to learn from each other and be able to view some wonderful photos of graceful beautiful dogs.

I think its great that everyone who has setters contributes to this site!! I have learned so much, especially from the working side of things!! We are all here for the love of setters regardless of which lines they are bred from!! But we are still all entitled to free speech and our opinions, and sometimes these become a bit heated! But we are all adults and should be tolerant of all opinions, even if we do not agree. Discussion is a healthy thing and I would not like this site to become a show or pet only site!!! After all setters here are hunters, show dogs, agility dogs, obedience dogs, family pets, companions and JUST GREAT!!!!!;o))
Of course, there is a 3rd side to having dogs too and that is just as pets. I did show my first Irish Setter in obedience, but Chester, my current Irish is not registered. He arrived in my home at 7 months of age from a rescue. He is apparently field bred, but for him, I think its more back yard bred and sold much to early to people who had no idea about Irish Setters. That's how he ended up in a rescue. I love the show Irish, I love the working Irish, and I love the pet Irish. They are a breed that can fit into many situations and always have fun doing whatever you ask them to do.
Thank you ladies for your opinions, I think it really all comes down to our love of setters in whatever 'field' they and we enjoy. Mavis hits the nail on the head: first and foremost I think our dogs are much loved pets and full members of the family.

In discussions that get a bit heated, let us agree to differ...
Hear, hear, Susan.
That is how all dogs should be - much loved pets and members of our families first no matter what else we train them to do.
I hope everyone enjoys their Setter(s) in whatever form they choose.
Pat
I also want to see "both" sides...or in fact all the sides there are to a setter.
Not being a show-person perhaps has something to do with it.
Unfortunatly (?) it looks as if the show-side is far better at handling a camera and more ready to add blogs and photos. Perhaps going to shows lends itself more to bringing a camera along than working with your dog does.
I for one NEVER take my camera along when I compete or train...or perhaps I am just lazy ? :-)

As for the discussions, it would be a totally boring site if we all agreed!
Well, personally I think you should take your camera. I love to see working pictures, and in fact you don't see a lot of them. I also like to see playing photos and show like photos, but seing them working is always so nice!
I have learned so much from everyone here and love to see photo's of all setters. No matter where they are from or what they are bred for. I enjoy them all. I for one really don't let snooty people bother me anyway. I smile and move along. The photo and video section is my fav here and actually I don't usually watch that many of the shows. I enjoy the real life moments and silliness of the breed in videos.
Setter of my dream is a dual-setter, show AND working at the same time.
Though in a reality it is hard to reach this, because these directions in many respects mutually exclusive… But I wish to tell, that "it is impossible to remain sitting on two chairs" maybe only if wishing the maximal results both in a ring and in a field. And if without fanaticism:), than AT DESIRE of the owner and a dog they can quite take pleasure in the most different kinds of activity, including both exhibitions, and hunting, and sports, .... and heart to heart talks. :)
I can not force people to work with their setters in fields, but I am very much pleased, if they do it:)

This year we have opened a working season in the middle of July, wenting on snipe and great snipe.
Happiness of my setters - Irish Vanja and Gordon Lesha - can not be transfer by words, it can be felt only TOGETHER WITH them in the fields! Their eyes, their tails, their coat full of fire and special plastic of all movements... And how proud they are, when owing to their diligence the bird is extracted!

Now we have a temporary break in hunting - Vanja must work as show-setter for some time:) :) :)
But my dogs even in city show classik work for the hunting birds.
For example, here Vanja points on grey partridges on a lawn near our house:)

Let they train - in October we shall again go hunts - on grey partridges this time...

By the way, Vanja and Lesha are INT.CHAMPIONS and BIS-Winners:)

And still I am very glad for Vanja's son, which in age of only 6 months already presents hunting ability!
Look at his FIRST work on great snipe on video:
