Of course, there is a 3rd side to having dogs too and that is just as pets. I did show my first Irish Setter in obedience, but Chester, my current Irish is not registered. He arrived in my home at 7 months of age from a rescue. He is apparently fi...

Chester - shown front & center in the picture with me, along with Dakota (springer spaniel cross), Jewel (African Grey Parrot) and Sweetie (Budgie) is a rescue. I was lucky enough to get him home with me when he was still young ( 7 1/2 months), after he spent his first 6 months ignored by the people who brought him home at just 5 weeks of age.

Burr Season

This could almost be burrrr (as in cold) season, since we're getting pretty close to frost some nights now, but I am referring to those sharp, prickly, sticky, messy burrs that get into the feathering of our beautiful dogs.

Chester happened to find a whole bunch of burrs on our run at the dog park today. He got some little black sticky ones - some small sharp, prickly green ones - and some big, brown sharp, prickly ones. A real nice combination of messy stuff.

Chester loves to ha

Chester had a swim!

Unlike some of the Irish Setters here, Chester does not appreciate water. He loves playing in mud, but will walk around a puddle of water every time. Well, today at the dog park, he ended up in the river. I didn't see what happened, so I don't know for sure how he got in there, but I think he must have fallen in as he was running along the riverbank. Its possible that another dog was running with him or towards him and he zigged instead of zagged - LOL.

Anyway, after I heard a splash,

Walking the Dogs

When Chester first arrived here, he was the 3rd dog in and at that point, taking the dogs for a walk was very difficult. I could drive them to the off-leash dog park and let them run, but 3 large dogs in the back of my little car means little fights would often occur in the crowded back seat. So, luckily I have a large back yard and they would put quite a few miles racing around. Unfortunately, Chester never did learn to walk on leash this way though.

This year, we were down to 2 dogs

Happy New Year to you and yours also, Mavis.
Thankyou for your wishes, and hope 2009 will be a wonderful year for you.
Just don't know where last year went to, so here's hoping this year slows down a little!
Cheers, Myra.

Thanks Mavis for asking me to be your friend. I have my first Irish Setter from Beaubriar, but I plan to show and breed her. I have been breeding show quality Rough Collies and Shelties for 40 years and the Irish Setter is my newest challenge. I love the breed already. Diane

I was just on your page. I really like the pics of your birds. My mom had a Blue and Gold Macaw for many years and I had two Cockatiels. Right now I have two black Lovebirds named Tristan and Aidan, they live with my friend until my husband and I get moved into our new house. Your dogs are very cute too by the way.

i tried to spray with lots of things. the best is still letting the dog go into water before the field session, our burrs won't get into the coat as long as the coat is wet (=soaking wet). but if it dries - hopeless again :-) on the other hand - i can never know when and where they grow. one time nothing, 2 days after full of burrs... maybe i should marry a man from the fire brigade to always have water if needed :-)))
