Recently scientists discovered a new case of symbiosis between organisms belonging to different species. Discovered case is similar to the well known symbiosis between Clown Fishes and anemones. Let’s remind: the anemone protects the Clown Fish from most predators, and the Clown Fish helps the anemone by cleaning it, as it eats detritus.
The new discovery concerns two species: Three-teeth Janka (
Janka tridentata) and Shameless Fokka (
Fokka impudica). Both organisms live on two levels of wooden structure: Janka settles the upper level and Fokka its bottom part. Fokka feeds on rests of Janka’s food, cleaning very efficiently the wooden structure. Scientists noticed that sometimes Fokka picks up the food (especially biscuits) directly from Janka’s tentacles. More research on this phenomenon is needed to state if Janka is sharing her food voluntarily.
